Mammoth Shoulder Season is Here
When I showed up at the ER on Wednesday evening it was obvious that Mammoth was in Shoulder Season. The parking lot was half empty and the waiting room only had one other person in it. Later that evening when I got home and was telling a So Cal friend how lucky I was that it was Shoulder Season she paused but then seemed to understand. From what I had said she assumed that this time of year, possibly because of the snow conditions, must be a time of lots of shoulder injuries. And since I was going into the ER with two broken arms then there were surely a few arm doctors available. Shoulder and arm doctors must be different, right?
Shoulder Season is the time between busy seasons. So, in Mammoth, this is the time between the winding down of ski season and the beginning of summer season. And the time between summer season and the beginning of the ski season. The dates are fluid and depend on how much snow we get, how long the ski season lasts and then again on how soon the snow comes in the fall.
When I pulled into the ER I was happy to see the evidence of Shoulder Season because that meant I would be seen sooner by the doctors. Our hospital and doctors are top notch because so many people come to Mammoth to recreate and that naturally leads to injuries. They have lots of practice. I was in and out in two hours. Having been examined multiple times and having had three limbs x-rayed. I went home with a broken left elbow and a broken right wrist. I was told it would take 6 weeks to recover.
I was over the moon. The last time I left the ER in June of 2022 I had 20 breaks and was told it would take me 18 months to recover. So this was peanuts. I got even better news yesterday in the Ortho Clinic. My right wrist isn’t broken, just severely bruised. So… best news ever… I only have one broken arm! Life is good!
Mammoth Mountain Ski Season End
As you know by now ski season is winding down but Mammoth Mountain has tons of fun still planned for closing Weekend. It coincides with Memorial Day and so it is a long weekend. Now is a wonderful time to visit. Town is relatively quiet but there are still so many things to do.
Watch out for Bears and Deer
The bears are awake and looking for food. Remember not to leave anything edible in your car. The local bear in my neighborhood opened five cars the other night. Thankfully he didn’t cause any damage other than taking a bite out of one center console. He didn’t get into my car, but he did cruise around the outside of the house. Photos below. The deer are on the move and migration is in full swing.
